The primary purpose of the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Health Service (HKHS) Resident Support Unit is to support all Resident Staff within the
health service, from Intern through to Senior Registrar level. We strive to assist all our resident doctors, from Intern to Senior Registrar level, to achieve their goals.
Orientation and innovation
In 2007 we initiated an innovative integrated orientation program for new interns and a number of international medical graduates. A major part of the orientation program was the ‘Code Red’ or
‘Amazing Race’ where each medical officer was assigned to a team, given a passport with numerous tasks to be completed and allocated to a team to accompany them through their
journey around HKH, finishing with a 'hospital expo' to introduce them to services available in the organisation. The orientation was highly successful with comments like “the best orientation ever I’ve ever been to” and “it’s great
to have fun while you’re learning.” Roll-on 2008!
Support for ongoing education is an important feature of HKHS. Formal education sessions for PGY1s and PGY2s take place both on and off the campus of Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital.
Support and education
The Resident Support Unit handles all HR functions for Medical staff. The unit actively recruits staff from overseas and manages both
the Immigration and NSW Medical Board processes. There is an “open door” policy within the unit to encourage Residents to feel comfortable about approaching any of the unit’s staff.
Our warm and friendly approach values the individual skills and needs of resident staff, and seeks to assist their career goals.
